Terms of use
The short version: the software is licensed to you, not sold. Use it on the Macs you own. Do not resell it or pull it apart to make a competing product. It is a disk utility that deletes files when you tell it to, so keep backups — your data is your responsibility, and our liability is limited to what you paid.
These terms apply to the macOS applications MacDiskCleanUp and MacDiskCleanUp Insights (the "Software") and to this website, all published by A4TEAM INC, a Delaware corporation ("we", "us"). By installing or using the Software you accept them. If you do not, do not install it.
1. Licence
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to install and use the Software on Macs that you own or control, for as long as these terms are observed.
A licence purchased directly covers one person and their own Macs. If you need to cover a team or a fleet, write to us — that is a normal request and we would rather answer it than have you guess.
Software obtained from the Mac App Store is additionally governed by Apple's own licensed application terms, which take precedence over these where the two conflict.
2. What you may not do
- Resell, rent, sublicense or redistribute the Software.
- Share, publish or resell a licence key. A key that appears publicly may be revoked.
- Reverse-engineer, decompile or disassemble it, except to the extent that law expressly permits despite this restriction.
- Remove or alter any copyright or licence notice.
- Use it to build a competing product.
3. Free and Pro
The free tier is free permanently and is not a time-limited trial. Pro features are unlocked by a licence purchased as an annual subscription or as a one-time lifetime purchase.
If an annual licence lapses, the Software reverts to the free tier. It does not lock, it does not hide what it already found, and restoring files it previously removed keeps working. We consider gating the undo of our own destructive action indefensible, and these terms say so on purpose.
"Lifetime" means the lifetime of the product: the licence does not expire and covers future versions, including major ones, with no upgrade fee. It is not a warranty that the Software will run on operating systems that do not exist yet, and it does not oblige us to develop the product forever. If the product is discontinued, existing lifetime licences keep working on the last released version.
4. Purchases and refunds
Purchases made directly are handled by a third-party payment processor; purchases in the Mac App Store are handled by Apple, and refunds for those follow Apple's process rather than ours. Our own refund position is on the refunds page and forms part of these terms.
5. The Software deletes files. Read this part.
MacDiskCleanUp removes files at your instruction. It is built to be careful about it: items it judges unsafe cannot be selected, every removal is confirmed by you, and what it removes is recorded so it can be restored. None of that makes deletion risk-free.
Keep current backups. Time Machine or any equivalent is sufficient. You are responsible for your data and for what you choose to remove. We are not able to recover files for you and cannot undo a removal that you also emptied from the Trash or that the restore ledger no longer covers.
MacDiskCleanUp Insights removes nothing under any circumstances.
6. No warranty
The Software is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We do not warrant that it will be free of defects, or that every figure it reports will be exact on every configuration of every Mac.
7. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, our total liability arising out of or relating to the Software or these terms is limited to the amount you paid for it in the twelve months before the claim. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for lost profits, lost data or lost time, even if we were told such damages were possible.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded. If you are a consumer, you have statutory rights that these terms do not affect.
8. Termination
The licence ends if you materially breach these terms — most obviously by publishing or reselling a key. You may stop using the Software at any time by deleting it. Sections 6, 7 and 10 — no warranty, limitation of liability, governing law — survive termination.
9. Changes
We may update these terms; the date at the top changes when we do. Changes apply to continued use of the Software from that date and are not retroactive. A change that materially reduces what an existing lifetime licence covers does not apply to licences already sold.
10. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules, and the state and federal courts located in Delaware have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising from them. A4TEAM INC is incorporated there, which is the only reason that is the answer.
If you are a consumer resident elsewhere, this does not deprive you of the protection of mandatory consumer law in your country of residence, or of the right to bring proceedings in your local courts where that law gives you one. Nothing here waives a right that cannot be waived.
