Getting started

MacDiskCleanUp Insights (Mac App Store)

  1. Open the app. It starts on the Folders screen.
  2. Click Add Folders… and choose one or more folders — your home folder, a project directory, an external drive.
  3. Click Measure. A folder with tens of thousands of files takes a few seconds.
  4. Overview, Storage Explorer, Large Files and Duplicates are then filled in.

The app can only see folders you hand it. That is the sandbox doing its job, and it is why the folder picker is the first thing you meet.

MacDiskCleanUp (direct download)

  1. Open the disk image and drag the app to Applications.
  2. On first launch it asks for Full Disk Access. Grant it in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access, then reopen the app.
  3. Click Scan Mac.

Common questions

Why does it need Full Disk Access?

macOS keeps caches, logs and application support files behind that permission. An app without it cannot even tell you those files exist, which would make the figures wrong in the one direction that matters. You can revoke it at any time; the app keeps working with less to show.

It says a folder could not be read.

Some locations are unreadable even with Full Disk Access — another user's home folder, iCloud Drive placeholders, or a volume with its own permissions. The app reports what it could not read rather than folding it silently into "Other". The count is on the Overview screen.

I removed something and want it back.

Open Cleanup History and restore from the entry. Restore is free in every licence state, including expired. If the Trash was emptied afterwards, or the ledger entry is gone, the app cannot bring the file back — a backup can.

The App Store version will not clean anything.

Correct, and not a fault. App Store apps run in a sandbox that forbids touching another app's files, so the store edition is a read-only analyser. The full app, downloaded directly, is the one that cleans.

My licence key is not accepted.

Keys are verified offline, so this is almost always a copy-and-paste problem — a missing character or a line break. Paste the whole key including any dashes. If it still fails, email us the address you bought with and we will reissue it.

How do I uninstall the app itself?

Drag it to the Trash. To remove its own stored data as well, delete ~/Library/Application Support/MacDiskCleanUp and ~/Library/Preferences/com.macdiskcleanup.*. The App Store edition keeps everything in its container, which macOS removes with the app.
